The 4th John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture

The 4th John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture was held on 23rd September 2021 at the Insurance Training College.

The CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda Mr. Alhaj Kaddunabi welcomed all guests and commended Hon. Ssebaana for his resourcefulness which enabled him to start SWICO in 1982.

Mr. Patrick Ocailap spoke on behalf of the chief guest, Mr. Ramathan Ggoobi; the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development. Mr. Ocailap was delighted to learn that the previous lectures had led to positive outcomes such as the development of tailor-made products for the market, training and professionalizing players within the industry, and designing policies for low-income earners.

The Keynote speaker Mr. Emmanuel Katongole referred to Hon. Ssebaana as “a man of all seasons”. Mr. Katongole lauded him for being resilient and starting the first indigenous insurance company. His parting remarks were for businesses and individuals alike to follow the Five D’s; DRIVE, DESIRE, DETERMINATION, DEDICATION, and DISCIPLINE.

Owekitibwa Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa spoke about the three bottom lines and five business and engagement values of the Buganda Kingdom. He concluded by highlighting the role of Weerinde Insurance Brokers in creating awareness about insurance in Uganda through the Buganda Kingdom.

Mr. Protazio Sande, the Director of Planning and Marketing Research from the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda noted that the insurance industry was resilient during the pandemic posting a growth of 12% in 2021. He urged businesses to balance employee flexibility and productivity and to conduct self-regulation without being too dependent on external regulators.

Mrs. Irene Kego Oloya, the CEO of Padre pio Insurance Brokers Ltd encouraged businesses to shift their focus away from product features to the feeling their products elicit from customers. She challenged the audience to always ask themselves how tech-savvy they are with their processes and staff.

Mr. Joseph W. Kiwanuka, the Managing Director of Statewide Insurance Company thanked all participants for attending the event and pledged SWICO’s continued support of the event for years to come.
