Opportunities in the insurance sector: Building on the legacy of the Late John Ssebaana Kizito.
On 29th August 2024, the Insurance Training College (ITC) conducted the 7th John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial lecture at Muteesa 1 Royal University in Mengo, Kampala in honour of the legacy of the man who co-founded the first Ugandan-owned insurance company in 1982- SWICO, also among the founders of the Insurance Institute of Uganda (IIU) which has transformed into the Insurance Training College in 2017. This event was graced by the Minster of State for Gender and Youth Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Attenyi who was the chief guest. We were also proud to host the CEO of the Uganda Insurers Association, Jonan Kisakye as the keynote speaker. Among the guests were students from Bishop Stuart University Mbarara, Gulu University, Makerere University Business School – Mbale Campus, Bugema University, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). To tackle this year’s theme “A Leap into the Labour Market: Opportunities for the Insurance Industry” ITC put together a squad of experienced professionals to inspire the university students with real-life experiences. During his opening remarks, Saul Sseremba the CEO-ITC emphasized ITC’s commitment to ensure that insurance knowledge reaches the youth early enough in their lives to allow them to make a good career choice early enough. “This will improve the enthusiasm among the sector workforce,” he added. Jonan Kisakye also highlighted with vast opportunities the youth have in the insurance sector as a fast-growing sector with trillions of shillings exchanging hands even when the penetration in the country is still less than 1%. The insurance sector employs many kinds of professionals including doctors, engineers, accountants, marketers, lecturers, events managers, and others. The Chief Guest commended ITC for the initiative to honour the Late Ssebaana Kizito who he described as a calm and resilient gentleman. He also shared his personal experience with the late who encouraged him to take up his first insurance policy many years ago. “Just like the government of Uganda has a ministry in charge of disaster preparedness, insurance also acts as disaster preparedness at a personal level to cushion our risks and we should also take it seriously,” Hon Balaam said. The board and management of ITC are grateful to all the universities, and guests who honoured our invitation to be part of the 7th John Ssebaana Kizito memorial lecture.
