Kampala, 27th June 2026 — ICEA Lion Uganda have done it again. The insurance giant successfully defended its title at the 11th Insurance Training College (ITC) Sports Gala, fending off stiff competition from 51 other companies to claim back-to-back championship honours in a day that showcased the very best of Uganda's insurance industry — both on and off the field.

ICEA Lion finished the day on top of the standings with 615 points, comfortably ahead of a determined Prudential Uganda side that closed the gap to 542.5 points in second place. Old Mutual Insurance Company rounded out the podium in third with 485 points, capping a fiercely contested battle for supremacy that ran across multiple disciplines throughout the day.

The numbers tell only part of the story. ICEA Lion's dominance was built on a clean sweep of three marquee team sports — football, netball, and basketball — a triple-discipline statement that left little doubt about their claim to the overall crown. But the day belonged to more than one champion.

Jubilee Insurance asserted themselves on the volleyball court, taking that title with authority, while Prudential Uganda showed their range beyond second place overall, picking up gold in both the swimming pool and the tug-of-war pit — proof that their squad had strength in both technique and brute force. Alliance Insurance claimed bragging rights in the sack race, a fan-favourite event that never fails to bring the laughs, while Old Mutual added a bottle balancing title to their podium finish — a discipline that demands the kind of precision and composure insurers like to believe defines their industry.

But if there was one moment that captured the spirit of the day, it was the CEO's Race — a sprint that saw some of the most powerful figures in Uganda's insurance sector trade their boardroom suits for race bibs and step onto the track to lead from the front, quite literally. It was a reminder, organisers say, that leadership in this industry does not stop at strategy and signatures — it shows up, laces up, and competes.

Speaking at the event, ITC Principal Saul Sseremba reflected on what the Gala has come to represent for an industry built on competition in the marketplace but unity in purpose. "The ITC Sports Gala is a reminder that while our organisations may compete in business, we share a common purpose of protecting lives, businesses, and communities," Sseremba said. "Events like these strengthen relationships, encourage collaboration, and reinforce the unity that continues to move our industry forward."

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Protazio Sande, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Regulatory Authority, echoed that sentiment as he handed ICEA Lion their winning trophy. "The strength of Uganda's insurance industry lies in its ability to work together," Dr. Sande said. "The teamwork, discipline, and solidarity demonstrated here are the same qualities that enable us to better serve the people and businesses that rely on insurance every day."

Now in its 11th year, the Sports Gala has firmly established itself as a fixture on the industry calendar — part competition, part celebration, and a full-scale display of the camaraderie that exists beneath the surface of Uganda's competitive insurance marketplace. The event was organised by ITC in partnership with the Insurance Regulatory Authority, the Uganda Insurers Association, the Uganda Insurance Agents Association, and the Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda — a coalition that, together, continues to turn an industry of rivals into a community of teammates, if only for one Saturday a year.

For ICEA Lion, the challenge now shifts to a different kind of competition: holding on to the crown for a third consecutive year when the industry returns to the field in 2027.
