ITC Commits to Driving the Digital Agenda in Insurance

As the leading hub for professional training and development in the insurance industry, the Insurance Training College (ITC) has committed to playing a pivotal role in advancing the digital agenda within the sector.

In his opening remarks at the 5th ITC International Insurance Conference on Thursday, October 24th October, sponsored by Sanlam Uganda, Saul Sseremba, the CEO of ITC, announced that the College has revamped its curriculum to include courses focusing on digital literacy, data analytics, and the application of modern technology in insurance.

“We are preparing the next generation of insurance professionals to thrive in an increasingly digital world by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the power of technology,” said Sseremba.

He further emphasized that digital solutions enable companies to offer more convenient and efficient services, such as mobile applications, online claims processing, and AI-powered customer support, thereby making insurance services more accessible and customer interactions more seamless.

Sseremba made these remarks while addressing industry players at the 5th Annual International ITC Conference, held at Nyaika Hotel in Fort Portal City under the theme “The Digital Agenda: What’s Next for the Insurance Industry?”

Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega, the CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) of Uganda, noted that today’s customers demand convenience, personalization, and seamless digital experiences. The rise of insurtech has enabled the creation of new digital products, platforms, and services, transforming service delivery. He highlighted that the insurance industry must move toward automated claims processing that is personalized based on real-time data.

“We are entering a phase where technology reshapes every aspect of our industry—from risk assessment and product development to the entire customer journey and claims management. Digital transformation will enhance processes, particularly in risk management and claims settlement. We should not wait for directives from the IRA but rather embrace digitalization proactively,” said Alhaj Lubega.

During a presentation on perspectives from insurtech, the keynote speaker, Moses Mukundi, CEO and Founder of Eden Care, discussed how embracing technology can transform healthcare accessibility and efficiency. He emphasized the importance of digital health insurance and social impact through innovation, urging healthcare providers to adopt digitization for faster service delivery and enhanced customer satisfaction.

“Digital identification is crucial for the effective delivery of health services. Providers need to know patients' identities to access relevant medical histories, ensure consistent diagnosis, and provide appropriate care,” Mukundi stated.

While Uganda’s insurance digital future looks promising, success will require collaboration across the industry. Members must embrace digital transformation, customers must adopt new technologies, and regulators must foster an environment that encourages innovation.

To appreciate the beauty of Fort Portal, Uganda’s tourism city, participants enjoyed an excursion to the Sempaya hot springs and a tour of cultural sites highlighting the Empaako Naming Ceremony. Empaako (pet names) are commonly used in social interactions among the Batoro.

Delegates were also treated to a welcoming cocktail event on Wednesday 23rd23rd, sponsored by ABSA bank, a BBQ dinner hosted by Minerva/GrandRe on Thursday 24th, and a Gala dinner on Friday 25th October at Nyaika Hotel - Fort Portal, hosted by African Reinsurance Company. At the gala dinner, sponsors, and partners were recognized for their efforts in contributing to the success of the 5th Annual ITC Conference.
