In a bid to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional growth, the Insurance Training College (ITC) hosted students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) for an insightful career guidance session. The session, held at ITC offices on 21st November 2024, aimed to provide students with information about career opportunities within the ever-evolving insurance industry.
Students gained a comprehensive understanding of the insurance industry, one of the most significant sectors providing employment opportunities in various roles. The major areas of discussion included the importance of innovation in insurance, emerging career paths, and the skills that future professionals need to thrive in this industry.
Saul Sseremba, the CEO of ITC, shared insights into the evolving insurance sector and how students can leverage these changes to build rewarding careers. He encouraged students to embrace digital tools, stressing the growing demand for tech-savvy professionals who can utilize data to inform decision-making. Sseremba highlighted the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data in insurance operations as critical trends shaping the industry.
“The partnership between ITC and universities through insurance clubs provides students with a unique platform to explore career opportunities in insurance, stay informed about industry trends, and develop the skills essential for success,” said Sseremba.
Dr. Kijjambu Fredrick, the Dean of the Faculty of Business Management Sciences at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), commended ITC for its efforts in professionalizing the insurance sector in Uganda. During his address, Dr. Kijjambu emphasized the university's Insurance Club's significant impact on students' career paths.
“The club not only provides students with a platform to engage and network with industry professionals but also offers them an opportunity to acquire professional certifications alongside their academic qualifications, giving them a competitive edge in the job market upon graduation,” said Dr. Kijjambu. As a faculty, we are deeply committed to providing career guidance, which is crucial in helping students make informed and strategic career decisions, he added.
Additionally, Ibrahim Ddumba, the Training Manager at ITC, illuminated the diverse career courses offered at ITC that help advance career opportunities, from traditional roles such as claims officers, adjusters, and underwriters to newer positions in data analytics, risk management, and digital insurance.
“The growing demand for skilled professionals in areas such as risk management, actuarial science, and customer service makes the industry attractive for students from diverse academic backgrounds. There is a scarcity of actuarial professionals. I encourage you to tap into the actuarial to stand out in the insurance market,” said Ibrahim.
The session emphasized the importance of internships and practical experience as critical stepping stones toward full-time employment. It represents a step forward in the ongoing collaboration between academia and ITC to ensure that the next generation of professionals is well-prepared to contribute to the growth and transformation of the insurance sector.
