ITC presents UAIS impact study findings, recommendations.

On 18th Jan 2024, the ITC team, led by Sylvia Kajubi, the Deputy Principal presented the findings and recommendations of the study on the Impact of the Uganda Agricultural Insurance Subsidy (UAIS) Scheme on the agricultural sector in Uganda, at Kabira Country Resort – Kampala.

In 2016, the government of Uganda started implementing the UAIS to improve farmers' income and livelihood, attract financing to the sector, and de-risk farmers from disasters beyond their control. Other objectives of the scheme included increasing insurance penetration among agricultural groups and driving innovation in the agricultural financing space.

The study revealed that 71.6% of the farmers who accessed the scheme realised an increment in their income. Also, about 70% of the subsidy fund was accessed through financial institutions i.e banks.

With funding from USAID's Feed the Future_ Uganda Institutional Systems Strengthening Activity, The Insurance Training College conducted the study on behalf of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA). The study was conducted in the central, eastern, northern, and Western regions of Uganda by a team of seasoned researchers and insurance professionals including Dr. Omeke Micheal, Mariam Mutalaga, Dr. Dan Ayebale, Ian Nkata, and Sylvia Kajubi.
