The latest edition of the Risk Officers Breakfast, held in partnership with Sky Re-Insurance Brokers Limited, brought together risk management professionals, industry leaders, and cybersecurity experts to discuss AI-enabled cybersecurity and governance. Against a backdrop of escalating cyber threats and rapid digital transformation, the event provided a platform to examine how organizations can harness artificial intelligence while strengthening governance, managing risk, and safeguarding critical data assets.

As organizations increasingly digitize their operations, discussions emphasized that while AI offers significant opportunities to strengthen cybersecurity, its success depends on effective governance, quality data, and informed human oversight. The session explored practical approaches to building resilient organizations that can adapt to evolving cyber threats while embracing innovation responsibly.

Representing the CEO of Sky Re-Insurance Brokers Limited, COO Joseph Iranya delivered the opening remarks on the evolving cyber threat landscape. He highlighted the growing sophistication and frequency of cyberattacks, urging organizations to move beyond reactive approaches to risk management. Instead, he called for resilient frameworks capable of anticipating emerging threats and adapting as technology and cyber risks continue to evolve.

Building on this foundation, facilitator Arinaitwe Bernard led an engaging session on the role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity and governance. While AI offers tremendous potential to strengthen cybersecurity, he emphasized that its success depends on the governance structures supporting its implementation.

Data Governance: A Cornerstone of Successful AI Adoption

A key area of discussion was data classification and minimization. Bernard encouraged organizations to collect only the data they require, classify it according to its sensitivity, and ensure it is securely stored. He noted that effective data governance enables organizations to detect fraud more efficiently, identify anomalies faster, and generate reliable AI-driven insights. He reminded participants that AI systems are only as effective as the quality of the data they receive, making data governance a cornerstone of successful AI adoption.

The session also explored best practices for managing sensitive data in AI systems. Bernard stressed the importance of protecting information through encryption, strong access controls, and compliance with data protection regulations. Organizations were encouraged to adopt responsible data governance practices that balance privacy with innovation while maximizing AI's potential.

Another highlight was the discussion on the core principles of AI governance, including transparency, accountability, fairness and non-discrimination, privacy and data protection, security and resilience, and human oversight. These principles were presented as essential to ensuring AI solutions remain ethical, trustworthy, and aligned with both organizational objectives and regulatory expectations.

Real-Time Threat Detection and Decision-Making

Participants also examined AI's growing role in real-time threat detection and decision-making. Bernard explained that AI can continuously monitor systems, identify suspicious activities, detect emerging threats, and support faster decision-making. However, he cautioned that organizations must carefully evaluate whether the AI tools they deploy can accurately identify risks and respond effectively. Technology alone, he noted, cannot guarantee cybersecurity; its effectiveness relies on strong governance and informed human oversight.

Throughout the session, one message remained clear: AI is an enabler, not a replacement for good governance. While AI can automate processes, improve detection capabilities, and enhance operational efficiency, organizations must continue investing in governance frameworks, skilled professionals, robust cybersecurity controls, and continuous learning.

Embrace AI Responsibly

The breakfast concluded with a call to action for risk professionals to embrace AI responsibly while strengthening cybersecurity resilience and protecting organizational data. As digital threats continue to evolve, organizations that combine innovative technologies with effective governance and informed decision-making will be best positioned to navigate the future of risk management.
